  4. The following document details the virus definitions update 
  5. procedures for:

  19. Intelligent Updater
  20. =====================================================================
  21. As part of SARC's continuing commitment to fight the spread of 
  22. computer viruses, Symantec has developed a new program called 
  23. Intelligent Updater to simplify virus definitions files updates. 
  24. Intelligent Updater locates Norton AntiVirus on your computer and 
  25. installs new virus definitions files automatically. All you have to 
  26. do is run the program then scan your disk with Norton AntiVirus. 
  27. Later sections of this document give step-by-step instructions for 
  28. each Norton AntiVirus version.
  29.  
  30. The Intelligent Updater program file is available in many on-line
  31. areas as well as distributed on the monthly virus definitions update
  32. disk. The program name, which changes from month to month, uses the
  33. following form:
  34.  
  35.      mmNAVyy.EXE, where mm is the month and yy is the year.
  36.  
  37. For example, 11NAV96A.EXE is the virus definitions files update 
  38. for November 5, 1996.

  42. Norton AntiVirus Program Upgrades
  43. =====================================================================
  44. If your version of Norton AntiVirus (NAV.EXE, NAVW.EXE or NAVW32.EXE) 
  45. is dated before June 1, 1996, you should update it with the latest 
  46. program updates available. As viruses continue to be discovered with 
  47. alarming regularity, the NAV virus definitions files have grown in 
  48. size to counter the latest threats. Applying the patches will ensure 
  49. that your installation will continue to accept the latest (and 
  50. largest) virus definitions files. Using older versions of Norton 
  51. AntiVirus can cause false detections when the new virus definitions 
  52. are installed.

  55. Norton AntiVirus 3.10 Engine Update (UPDATEME.EXE) 
  56. --------------------------------------------------
  57. To upgrade your Norton AntiVirus 3.0 program:
  58.  
  59.   * Download the file called UPDATEME.EXE
  60.   * Place the file in an empty directory and execute the file
  61.     to extract its components.
  62.   * Enter:  PATH;  at the DOS prompt.
  63.     DonÆt forget the semicolon. This command temporarily disables 
  64.     your path statement and will prevent corruption of NAV Network 
  65.     Manager installations.
  66.   * Run UPDATE.EXE to create a set of install files.
  67.     To place these files on floppies and create a new installation 
  68.     disk set, enter A:\ when it prompts for a location to EXTRACT the
  69.     files to.
  70.   * From DOS, run INSTALL.EXE.
  71.  
  72.   * After applying this patch, you must also update your virus 
  73.     definition set.

  76. NAV for Windows 95 v1.0, 95.0b Large Volume Update (NAV95OB.EXE)
  77. ----------------------------------------------------------------
  78. This latest patch also adds support for Microsoft Service Pack 2 (FAT
  79. 32/large volumes) and will be required to apply the December 1996 
  80. virus definitions set.

  82. To upgrade your Norton AntiVirus for Windows 95 program:
  83.  
  84.   * Download the file called NAV95OB.EXE
  85.   * Close (exit from) all open applications before running 
  86.     NAV950B.EXE.
  87.   * Place the file in an empty folder and execute the file
  88.     to begin the installation process.
  89.  
  90.   * After applying this patch, you must also update your virus 
  91.     definition set.

  97. UPDATEME.EXE and NAV95OB.EXE are located where the monthly virus
  98. definitions files update are normally found. They are available for
  99. download from the Symantec BBS, the Symantec FTP or Web site,
  100. CompuServe, America Online, or Microsoft Network. You can also call
  101. Customer Service at (800) 441-7234 to order a disk set.

  105. Norton AntiVirus for Windows 95 versions 1.0 and 2.0
  106. =====================================================================
  107. To update Norton AntiVirus for Windows 95 virus definitions files:
  108. ------------------------------------------------------------------
  109. 1. Go to or select the folder where you placed the Intelligent 
  110.    Updater program (11NAV96A.EXE).
  111. 2. Double-click on the file 11NAV96A.EXE.
  112. 3. Follow the instructions on screen.
  113. 4. Start Norton AntiVirus and scan your drive. Scanning your drive 
  114.    activates the new virus definitions.
  115. 5. Restart your computer so that Auto-Protect uses the new 
  116.    definitions as well.

  120. Norton AntiVirus 3.0
  121. =====================================================================
  122. To update Norton AntiVirus 3.0 virus definitions files, use one of 
  123. the following procedures. Either procedure will update both the 
  124. Norton AntiVirus 3.0 DOS and Windows components.

  126. To update Norton AntiVirus 3.0 virus definitions files from Windows:
  127. --------------------------------------------------------------------
  128. 1. Go to or select the directory where you placed the Intelligent 
  129.    Updater program (11NAV96A.EXE).
  130. 2. Double-click on the file 11NAV96A.EXE.
  131. 3. Follow the on screen instructions.
  132. 4. After the update is complete, start Norton AntiVirus and scan your 
  133.    drive. Scanning your drive activates the new virus definitions.
  134. 5. Restart your computer so that Auto-Protect uses the new 
  135.    definitions as well.

  138. To update Norton AntiVirus 3.0 virus definitions files from DOS:
  139. ----------------------------------------------------------------
  140. 1. Go to or select the directory where you placed the Intelligent 
  141.    Updater program (11NAV96A.EXE).
  142. 2. From the DOS prompt, type 11NAV96A.EXE and press Enter. 
  143. 3. Follow the instructions on screen.
  144. 4. After the update is complete, start Norton AntiVirus and scan your 
  145.    drive. Scanning your drive activates the new virus definitions.
  146. 5. Restart your computer so that Auto-Protect uses the new 
  147.    definitions as well.

  151. Norton AntiVirus Network Manager
  152. =====================================================================
  153. Important Notice: If your version of Norton AntiVirus Network Manager 
  154. (NAVNET.EXE) is dated before February, 1996, you must upgrade your 
  155. software before updating the virus definitions files. Using an older 
  156. version of the Norton AntiVirus Network Manager with the new virus 
  157. definitions may generate false alarms. 
  158.  
  159. To upgrade your Norton AntiVirus Network Manager program, download 
  160. the file named UPDATEME.EXE. Place the file in an empty directory and 
  161. execute UPDATEME.EXE to extract its contents. Step-by-step
  162. instructions are included in the "Norton AntiVirus Program Upgrades"
  163. section of this file (above).

  165. After updating Norton AntiVirus Network Manager, you must do the 
  166. following:
  167.  
  168. 1. Delete all VIRSP*.DAT files from the Norton AntiVirus Network 
  169.    Manager directory.
  170. 2. Recreate your .NNS files using the new _DEFAULT.NNS as a template.
  171.  
  172.    For information on how to recreate .NNS files, order faxback #4290 
  173.    from our free faxback service at (541) 984-2490, option 2.
  174.    UPDATEME.EXE is located where the monthly virus definitions files 
  175.    updates are normally found. It is available for download from the 
  176.    Symantec BBS, the Symantec FTP or Web sites, CompuServe, America

  183. 1. On a workstation connected to the network, change to the directory 
  184.    where you placed the Intelligent Updater program (11NAV96A.EXE).
  185. 2. Map a drive letter to the volume and directory where Norton 
  186.    AntiVirus Network Manager is installed. 
  187. 3. You must have READ and WRITE access to the mapped drive.
  188. 4. From a DOS prompt, type 11NAV96A.EXE [path] and press Enter.
  189. 5. [path] is the location mapped in step 2. Follow the instructions 
  190.    on screen.
  191. 6. Start Norton AntiVirus from the Norton AntiVirus Network Manager 
  192.    directory and scan a drive to activate the new virus definitions.

  196. Norton AntiVirus for Windows NT 2.00
  197. =====================================================================
  198. To update Norton AntiVirus for NT virus definitions files from 
  199. Windows NT 3.5x:
  200. --------------------------------------------------------------
  201. 1. Go to or select the directory where you placed the Intelligent 
  202.    Updater program (11NAV96A.EXE).
  203. 2. Double-click on the file 11NAV96A.EXE.
  204. 3. Follow the on screen instructions.
  205. 4. After the update is complete, start Norton AntiVirus and scan your 
  206.    drive. Scanning your drive activates the new virus definitions.
  207. 5. Restart your computer so that Auto-Protect uses the new 
  208.    definitions as well.
  209.  
  210. To update Norton AntiVirus for NT virus definitions files from 
  211. Windows NT 4.0:
  212. --------------------------------------------------------------
  213. 1. Go to or select the folder where you placed the Intelligent 
  214.    Updater program (11NAV96A.EXE).
  215. 2. Double-click on the file 11NAV96A.EXE.
  216. 3. Follow the instructions on screen.
  217. 4. Start Norton AntiVirus and scan your drive. Scanning your drive 
  218.    activates the new virus definitions.
  219. 5. Restart your computer so that Auto-Protect uses the new 
  220.    definitions as well.

  224. Norton AntiVirus for NetWare version 2.0
  225. =====================================================================
  226. Important Notice: If your version of Norton AntiVirus for NetWare, 
  227. version 2.0 is dated earlier than December 13, 1995, you must upgrade 
  228. your software before updating the virus definitions files. The new 
  229. version of Norton AntiVirus for NetWare detects and eliminates a new 
  230. class of viruses called macro viruses. These viruses infect Microsoft 
  231. Word document and template files, and Microsoft Excel files. 
  232.  
  233. For information on how to receive the upgrade, call Customer Service 
  234. at (800) 441-7234.
  235.  
  236. To update Norton AntiVirus for NetWare virus definitions files:
  237. ---------------------------------------------------------------
  238. 1. On a workstation connected to the network, change to the directory 
  239.    where you placed the Intelligent Updater program (11NAV96A.EXE).
  240. 2. Map a drive letter to the volume and directory where Norton 
  241.    AntiVirus for NetWare is installed. 
  242. 3. You must have WRITE access to the mapped drive.
  243. 4. Disable the Norton AntiVirus for NetWare NLM.
  244.    * Choose DISABLE NLM from the Tools menu in the Norton AntiVirus 
  245.      for NetWare Windows configuration window.
  246.    * Press F3 at the NAVNLM server console screen. 
  247. 5. From a DOS prompt, type 11NAV96A.EXE [path] and press Enter.
  248. 6. [path] is the location mapped in step 2. Follow the instructions 
  249.    on screen.
  250. 7. Enable the Norton AntiVirus for NetWare NLM. 
  251.    * Choose ENABLE NLM from the Tools menu in the Norton AntiVirus 
  252.      for NetWare Windows configuration window.
  253.    * Press F2 at the NAVNLM server console screen.

  257. Installing Virus Definitions Files Manually
  258. =====================================================================
  259. If you do not want Intelligent Updater to install the new virus 
  260. definitions for you automatically, you can use the /DUMP command to 
  261. extract the virus definitions files, then copy the appropriate files 
  262. to the Norton AntiVirus folder.
  263.  
  264. To install virus definitions files manually:
  265. --------------------------------------------
  266. 1. Copy the Intelligent Updater program (11NAV96A.EXE) to an empty 
  267.    temporary folder.
  268. 2. Launch the Intelligent Updater program using the /DUMP command:
  269.  
  270.    11NAV96A.EXE /DUMP
  271.  
  272.    Virus definitions files for all supported platforms are extracted 
  273.    into the temporary folder.
  274. 3. Copy the appropriate files to the Norton AntiVirus folder.
  275. 4. Refer to the Intelligent Updater File List below for information 
  276.    on which files to copy into the Norton AntiVirus folder.
